Scare Tactics Used to Protect the Papal Office? Sanctioned Child Abuse in Rome?

Greetings Fellow Travelers
Did you hear about the 150,000 or so who rallied at the Vatican to support the Pope? It was almost encouraging to see so many people and to hear the Pope claim the church has evils that need to be purged.
I was even beginning to be a little encouraged myself, being a victim of child abuse that was "swept under the rug," as the overwhelming majority of abuse exacted by priests is done by the Catholic church.
Then I saw this;
"We want to show our solidarity to the pope and transmit the message that single individuals make mistakes but institutions, faith and religion cannot be questioned," Alemanno told Associated Press Television News. "We will not allow this."
SO, am I to understand that "Rome's center-right Mayor Gianni Alemanno," according to the story from the Associated Press and published on Yahoo, wants the Catholic institution to hold Carte Blanche over moral issues that it cannot even control?
Wrong, wrong, wrong!
The Catholic church needs very much to be questioned. ANY institution, religion or "faith" that systematically points its finger in the faces of it people for their sin and then condones that same evil by hiding it and re-assigning the offenders MUST be questioned. Any "faith" that allows its children to have their lives destroyed MUST be questioned. Any "religion" that promotes the destruction of innocence BY ITS OWN EMISARRIES MUST BE QUESTIONED!
And you, Mr. Alemanno, must be questioned, as your thoughts on such a powerful "institution" as the Catholic church are highly questionable.
Right now, as you read this, a child is having his or her childhood stolen by a priest who will NEVER be punished by the "church." That child will struggle to know even the simple joys of their childhood and will fight depression and may go so far as suicide- all because someone who molested and/or raped them did so with the silence of their "he's a priest so he must be right" parents, along with anyone else who refuses to require accountability from their "institution, faith, and religion."
No, this must be questioned, and even if I am the only voice with the courage to do so, it will.
This I assure you.

Top-level comments on this article: (9 total)"But institutions, faith and religion cannot be questioned" Nonsense. All of those should be questioned-- as a matter of fact, everything should be, or better put, could be questioned. Without questioning things stay the same and people do not grow. Questioning is fine and if Jesus was walking amongst us now I cannot imagine him not questioning many things--this topic unquestionably being one of them. Great article.I totally agree, Jesus would want to know why so many people sit on their hands concerning child abuse by priests, and preachers, and bus drivers and, and, and ...The Pope doesn't need support. The children do. Who's rallying for them?Thank you so much for reading and commenting.BTW, awesome pic! It reminded me of my camping days!
Question everything, especially something that is steeped in tradition and old ways. Why? Because many times many bad things are found under rocks. Great job, sir.Thank you, Michael. I had not even planned to write an article that day but seeing the quote "We cannot allow this" just got my blood boiling!
Many church policies being called into question now and it's about time. However, the Mayor of Rome does not speak for the Vatican. From the comments I've seen from the Pope and others, there's a lot of housecleaning being done. Let's hope every speck of dirt is found and removed.I think if Jesus were here, His first concern would be the abused children, (many now adults). Then, He would turn on the perpetrators, and I wouldn't want to be in their shoes!Hi Carolyn! No, the mayor does not speak for the Vatican- he speaks for the throngs that support it.I see a lot of lip-service about the issue, but no real effort to fix it. I see a LOT of cover up and hiding behind the church, but no effort to heal the broken children. The Catholic church is a powerful organization that will beat you down if you stand up to them, even when "questioning" their vile and wretched, long-held practices of sheltering priests with filthy hands.Jesus would burn down the Vatican, in my opinion.Thank you so much for reading and commenting.
Great article. Well done.I totally agree with you. When they say "you can't question" it not because there is nothing to question its because there is so damn much that needs to be questioned and telling people not to question authority makes the authority more powerful. Too powerful.I would however, go a step further than you. I agree with Richard Dawkins, Sam Harrris and Christopher Hitchens when they say the pope should be arrested. No one is above the law in my eyes (including the pope). I think that the pope should have to answer - in court - over his handling of the child molestation cases and numerous other issues like condoms in Africa. Do you agree?Thank you, Connor.I absolutely agree, and would love to be one to arrest him and slap the cuffs on. But, the controversy continues as does the abuse and the destroying of young, innocent lives. That's what throws me into a rage. I know the lasting effects of such abuse and dream of the healing that will NEVER be. Filthy, disgusting and damned- no robe can hide such evil forever.Thank you, Connor, for reading and commenting.
Ken you are not the only voice, but thanks for having the courage to speak out so clearly. I'm with you on this 100%Thank you, Jennifer. I know there are others who hate this practice of hiding abuse, though sometimes I feel I'm the only one.
Oh,Ken, thanks for writing this with passion and clarity. This issue must be addressed. Thanks for writing about a topic that is so personal. Thanks for shining the spotlight where it needs to go and for bringing light into darkness here.Thank you, Marijo. I appreciate the support.
Ken-very well-spoken! I could not agree more with you! Thanks so much for sharing and questioning!Thank you, Laura. It is a major problem. Thanks for stopping by.
I agree with you 100%, Ken. It is time people stop hiding behind the mantle of "religion" and accept the consequences of their actions. Thanks for bringing this out into the open. It's so much easier to keep one's heroes than to face reality, right.Thank you, Lorrie.
Thanks Ken for a great article and a well expressed stand on a subject that should be corrected. It doesn't matter who you are, a crime is a crime and all should be punished alike for it.So true, Joel. How much pain and misery has and will be created just to keep the religious status quo?Thank you for reading and commenting.
