When is a Good Time to Ignore Your Muse? Never, if You Know What's Good for You!

Greetings Fellow Travelers

Here it is, 0330, and I have been up for two hours already. At first I was ordered to read. I am currently working on Ted Dekker's "Sinner," a great story. After about 45 minutes or so I was ordered to work on my autobiography.

My research online has not produced the fruit I need so I was further instructed, (Ordered!) to shoot out some emails to a couple of folks, librarians, etc, who could help me get the information I require.

So, I am hoping to

What's that? Who keeps ordering me around? No, it's not Janie, my wife. She is in the bedroom snoozing, as is most of the folks in this great nation.

It's my muse.

You know, that little "person" inside you who inspires and motivates you, even throwing in ideas from time to time.

Yea, THAT one!

I am not talking about a physical being, or a visible presence. I mean something much more powerful, much more demanding and many times more beneficial and rewarding. Let me explain.

I wanted to focus on "Taagenwulf" as my next book offering, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! The "boss" says to get going on the autobiography.

" But, it's hard," I say, "there is a lot of pain and misery to dig through, and that's the stuff I KNOW is there. What happens when the hidden stuff comes flying out? Are you gonna help me then?"

I feel silly asking that last one. Not because it might appear as though I am talking to no one, but that I know my muse has never and will never steer me wrong. It's only when I fail to listen to her that I go off the path.

That's your instinct, you say, not some magical fairy that's gonna give you directions!

No, it's my muse. And for whatever reason I see my muse as a "she." A soft spoken but stern voice that prompts and prods me along on my path and growth as a writer. She is a force as strong as a mothers love and as supportive as any sister.

Instinct tells me not to go down a certain road. My muse tells me to go down a certain road because discovery awaits there. Instinct might say but that's too dangerous. My muse will tell me Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Instinct might be wrong, but my muse never is.

Instinct is fuel a muse will, well, use, to get you to follow your heart, which will lead you towards your dreams and the fulfillment of your purpose. You are not here just to fill some space. You are not here just here to accumulate wealth for your own use only.

You have been given a muse just as I have. She is there, maybe waiting patiently or perhaps screaming her lungs out, but, she is there. Have you listened to her? Do you know how?

My "messages" or "orders" usually come as a tingle in my chest that explodes into a volley of energy pulses that push me to go further, to dig deeper, to not settle for anything less than the best I can do. My humanity gets in the way and I make mistakes, but she is ready for that, standing by with encouragement and yet more inspiration and direction.

However, in order to have the benefits we must pay the price, and that is to do away with the false and non-productive delusion that our intelligence will get us where we want to go. Intelligence is yet another tool our muse will , again, use, to get us where we need to be.

I'll leave you with this.

Have you slowed down and listened to your muse today? You will do great things if you will.

Nice! I always listen to my muse, Ken, and it always tells me to hurry and write it down! Thanks for sharing what was going on while I was snoozing.

I am SO sorry for taking so long to respond!

I'm with you, but trying to always keep pen and paper nearby ends up with hundreds of tiny notes, some written on napkins, fliers, office memos and such.

Ahhh, the writers life for me!

Thanks, Michael.
