My Advice to the Duggars- Plan Now for When the Money Train Derails

Greetings Fellow Travelers ...

It amazes me how some folks just do not get the message. After all, there are loads of venues for spreading the word- Television, radio, newspaper, internet, word of mouth.

All are effective, to be sure. Still, one can be away from the television or have the computer turned off when an important story breaks or an emergency announcement is made.

No one, however, can be out of range of God, or can they?

Yet again, even if the news gets through there is the mis-interpretation of the message. Think of the famous "War of the Worlds" broadcast. Even with repeated breaks in the program to let folks know that it was a completely made up "news story" for pure entertainment, a lot of people still did not get the message.

They heard the initial news reports of Martian invaders and ran with it. Or just ran.

This is what I believe happened with the Duggars, the ever-expanding family sliding into the mega household slot left vacant by Jon and Kate.

Again, this is conjecture on my part, but I think they read in the Bible where God told Noah to "replenish the earth." Well, the earth is plenty replenished, wouldn't you say?

Just because one can get away with it, or it scratches an itch- or they are biologically capable- does not grant Holy Permission for mass birthing.

The Duggar parents should by now be fully aware of what causes pregnancy and be able to prevent it.

And the television show did not help either.

The ugly reality is that at least some of the people on shows like "Extreme Makeover- Home Edition" will lose their property because of skyrocketing taxes. But the Duggars will simply tap into a new revenue source.

Grocery store openings, car wash groundbreaking ceremonies along with carnival acts such as "Guess Which Duggar I Am" could be profitable.

Naaaah!!

The Learning Channel and the Discovery Channel will combine into the Irresponsibility Channel. This will at least provide more competition. Sporting events are another possibility.

How about sack races with members of opposing families with more than 14 kids? Or the "I can squirt a kid out faster than you" elimination challenge? Don't laugh. That is exactly the kind of sickness we are moving towards.

Remember the celebrity "reality" shows where folks who used to be on top were now willing to wet themselves on national television just to get some attention?

If no other family can rise to the level of the Duggars then they will be forced to compete amongst themselves. Shows like "1200 Grandchildren and Counting!" spring to mind.

Come on, people. As beautiful as childbirth is it is not a miracle. Being loving responsible parents is. Creating children to capitalize on public sentiment is a crime.

That is exactly what is going on here. People are giving up on being "discovered" at a drug store soda fountain or winning the lottery. Even being lucky enough to become wealthy because you were clobbered by an eighteen wheeler is not sure enough.

But childbirth in mass quantities is!

I have not watched any portion of any program that glorifies irresponsible parents for a long while now. What prompted this piece is seeing news teasers on the internet trying to get me interested in the latest farcical Duggar or Duggar-like fiasco touted as newsworthy.

At least Richard Heene had an original idea with the "My boy is trapped in a balloon that's floating away" scam.

Please, America, let's stop this nonsense before the government declares a Population Emergency and creates the Reproductive Control Bureau.

If it hasn't already, that is.

Ken,

I couldn't agree more.   Gosh, I love your humor.  I confess that I knew nothing about the Duggars until I read your article but I do agree.  I find these reality shows debasing.  What ever happened to decency, common sense, morality and a respect for values (as well as our elders)?

There is no doubt that 'life is going down the tubes.'

I feel sorry for all those kids, smiling constantly, not a hair out of place. Their "reality" show is far from it.

Thank you, Nancy, for reading and commenting!

Ken,

As the youngest child in a large family (still less than half the Duggar's size), I cringe every time I see/hear about the Duggar's latest addition. My parents loved me, that I knew, but it was no secret to me that my mother was overwhelmed and needed my sisters to help raise me. I knew she needed me to become independent quickly. I'm not bitter, I'm glad I learned to take care of myself, I just sometimes wish I hadn't needed to do it so early. I can't imagine how it is for little Duggar's number 7 - 18 or so. Momma certainly doesn't have the time to really care for them and I don't care how efficiently their household is run, a big sister is NOT a substitute for a mother. Trust me, I know.

I believe you absolutely, Jean.

In the situation like the Duggars mom is not mom, she's more like a distant CEO. In charge but unreachable, at least that's my take on it. How could she be anything else?

Thanks for stopping by.

Another thought or two...

The Duggar's say that they will not use advances in science for birth control, but they have no problem (rightfully so) in using advances in science to save the life of their tiny child. Just like others who use in vitro fertilization to get pregnant then go ahead and have 8 babies because it must have been "God's" will. I'm actually not someone who would have an abortion, I do believe life begins long before birth, I just think these statements smack of hypocrisy. Either you use science or you don't.

On a completely different note, one of my older sisters is married to a wonderful man but they have chosen to not have any children at all because she says she already raised 4 children (her younger siblings). I wonder what the Duggar's many younger children will do with their procreation choices.

I suppose the Duggar kids will negotiate their best deal. I just hope they are smart enough to get a signed contract before the childbirth marathon begins.

Well done. The Learning Channel has been the 'Irresponsible Channel' for awhile now, and yet people still watch. Go figure. I wonder what emptiness is within people to actually watch (and look forward to watching!) these dysfunctions on television.
I guess it's true, though, what they say: give the people what they want. Apparently we don't want fairness in our justice system, transparency in government, or honest reporting in our media. We just want train-wrecks on television. Sad, of course.
Thanks for sharing, Ken.

Train wrecks always get a lot of media, don't they? Whether it's an actual train or the latest Hollywood celebrity going into court or rehab.

Thanks, Michael. I appreciate it.
