Greetings Fellow Travelers ...
I just never know when I'll get an idea for an article, or, when an article will come to me. Such was the case tonight.
I was at work. I had a few minutes to kill so I stood at the nurses station and was playing Galaga on my phone, simply playing and in my own world- until I heard these words.
For some reason that caught my attention. My mind went through several possible answers, none of which made any sense.
Then a nurse, with an accent that made it nearly impossible to know what she was saying, asked something to the effect of, "Huh?"
The person who had asked the original question essentially repeated it. Again, I tried to figure out why, while listening yet and trying to save the world from an invasion of insect-like marauders.
The first nurse consulted one of her fellow nurses who was sitting nearby. Both expressed profound confusion as to why such an order would exist. Both asked the curious one where she had heard that.
She replied that she was told this during the shift change report. Both RNs said they had never heard of such a thing. The chart was accessed and the original order read aloud.
It read like any number of text messages you may have seen or sent. The number "4" was used in place of the word "for." The patient was to use the restroom ONLY "for" BMs, not the other. In other words, complete bed rest except for, well, you know.
So, can you see why texting while driving is not the worst?

Top-level comments on this article: (8 total)Oh My! Very funny. misunderstandings can get a little messy if not straightened out right away. Thanks for sharing a night at work. Now I am curious as to what other kind of things are discussed. I appreciate the giggle. Lord bless you bro! SisHi Sis,Sometimes the less you know, the better. Thanks for reading and commenting.
That's hilarious Ken. It makes you wonder how many people out there are getting texts and thinking 'huh?' I'm embarrassed to say I haven't mastered the art of texting yet, since I rarely use my cell phone. Thanks for the laugh. My wife, my kids and I text a lot but, maybe it's the writer in me, I spell everything out. It bugs me to see " how r u?"I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment.
My curiosity got the best of me and I had to see what you were talking about. Hilarious! Although, just last year in my town a young boy was texting while driving and caused an accident that killed another man, so there is a downside too. Thanks for lightening it up for us, though.SandraTexting while driving is absolutely dangerous and that, as evidenced in your example, is all too true. I hate to think what could happen if doctors do it regularly!Everything is supposed to be written out longhand according to regulation, but ...Thanks for stopping by!
Great article. Well done.I have to get a translator -my phone mad parents or sister- to translate messages in text "language". Just the other day someone told me what a "chav" was. According to them they are a person "who wears like totally wears weird socks and takes ecky and that".I 'm glad you explained a "chav." I have never heard of that before! Fortunately I don't get a lot of those kinds of, umm, "words."Thank you for reading and commenting.
Hilarious, Ken!I wonder why people text and drive, to be honest. I never understood it. Doesn't it take two hands to text? And if not, doesn't it take a long time to do it with one? I should think it would be easier to talk, but then again I might be a throwback. Well done.I think it goes back to the "that can never happen to me" misconception. I can see disaster happening just trying to READ a text while driving!Thank you for reading and commenting, Michael.
Ken,This is a great write! And, I have seen texting become the root of many mistakes; much more in texting language. It gets so confusing for some that may not use texting, or just have a strong usage of 'regular' grammar. Thanks for sharing this with us.Thank you, Ronyae.I guess I'm just too old, but it bugs me to see words reduced to letters. Thanks for reading and commenting- it's greatly appreciated!Believe me, Ken. Age has nothing to do with the fact of people being lazy. (smile)
Hi Ken.Thanks for sharing this article. Interesting and I enjoyed reading it.Best regards,NenitaThank you, Nenita.I could fill a book with the stuff I see and hear at the hospital, but I need to have another career lined up first!!
Ken, u had me roflol! (I HAD to do that...) It sounds like not just texting, but texting abbreviations can he hazardous to your health. Thanks. No worries. I've "roflol"-ed a few times myself. But I would hate to see what would happen if a doc wrote an order like that! Thanks for stopping by.
