One of the Most Important Things in My Life- Going Home

Greetings Fellow Travelers

Tomorrow I am going home. I live 140 miles away, and while there are plenty of folks who are much, much further from their home, I feel as if I am on the moon.

Down deep, I am a homebody. I love to travel and see new things, but I always look forward to going home. That's where my heart is.

I have a well paying job here, and it is a good job besides that. I work in a level 3 NICU with tiny, tiny people who are most demanding- not to mention the patients!! But seriously.

I see these babies born prematurely, needing huge amounts of support to stay alive, and I realize that I am blessed to be able to care for them as I do. Of course I want to write for a living, but I have no right to complain. But I love to go home more.

To me, going home is like being in line for a ride at Disney World. Being in line is the price one pays for riding, and working away from home is the price I pay for going home.

At Disney, what helps me deal with the wait, the shuffling around of humanity, making my way through the queue, trying not to blow up at line jumpers, is the thought of how much fun the ride will be.

And the excitement of the ride increases exponentially as I get closer. Hearing the coaster take off and return and knowing that soon I will be one of those "lucky ones" makes the ride that much sweeter.

After the ride, after I have been home, I'll return to the end of the line and start the process over again. Then I remind myself.

I am not here to draw a paycheck. I'm here to go home.

And, tomorrow, I am going home

Ken,

I can definitely relate. I've been as far as next door to home for an overnight stay, and felt like I was miles away from home. There are times when what's yours is yours and they are sort of like a security blanket. In a sense, I guess.

Great write!

Thank you, Ronyae. Being away from our "security blanket," whatever it is, reallly highlights what is important in our life, doesn't it?

Bro, you cut through my heart with this one (in a good way, of course) My Art said something similar last week. He is blessed and contented knowing that the bills are paid and his family is fed. He might be away physically, but his heart is right here with us. It is obvious it is the same for you. Enjoy home, dear brother, enjoy home. I am going to share this story with Art. He is coming home later than orginally thought, not til May 15th. But he will be home for 3-4 weeks, so I am patiently (lie) waiting :-)

Blessings to you and yours!!

My prayers are with you, Sis. You are a great inspiration to myself and others- and I am sure for Art as well. I know I would go through anything for Janie, as Art would for you.

How blessed he and I are to have married up!!

No worries. I think it's a wandering glitch, because it's happened a few times before.

I just returned home after only being gone three days but it felt like forever. I always think of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, there's no place like home. I am so happy for you and would like to thank you for such a wonderful and heartwarming article.

This is a nice article, Ken. Home isn't where all your 'stuff' is, it's where you are truly you.
Very well done, thank you for sharing this.

Great article Ken, how good it must feel going home, I know when I was away on business trips how good it felt to get home, and it is great. This was very heartfelt, and sincere in it's meaning. I like the way you compare it with standing in line at Disneyland, great example. As usual, your articles never disappoint me. Your pal, and fan.......Gary

There is no greater feeling than heading to the place one calls home. A "soft place to land," as Dr Phil calls it. Actually, the only thing stronger than the sad feeling of leaving Disney World is the joy of heading back home.
Thank you, Gary, for being such a great fan, friend, and writer.
