The BlackBerry Curve As a Writing Tool

Greetings Fellow Travelers...

If you are reading this then my first attempt at writing and submitting with my BlackBerry Curve was a success.

I am going to give you a play by play account of this maneuver as it unfolds. Currently I am at work- on break- testing my hypothesis of using every spare moment to indulge in my passion; writing.

It seems to be a bit of a challenge to punch out words on this tiny but complete keyboard. It doesn't help that my fingers are huge, but, such is life.

I have started a fiction story on this "phone" already. If this works out it will be huge. I know I can transfer documents to my computer, documents born on this unit.

The likely glitch will be data transfer using a wifi or the EDGE network combined with the BlackBerry network. You know how it is and how frustrating dropped calls are. I can imagine losing the comnnection during an article submission is at least ten times more so. (A side note- I had to re-type "during" a grand total of eight times. "Dring, duing, dingr")

Of course the curious and unwashed are all around asking "what are you doing? Texting?"

"No"

"Internet?"

"No"

"Must be something, staring at the screen?"

"No" - I wanted to follow that with "isn't there somewhere else for you to be right now?" But we must be nice, yes?

It's now over three hours later. I have been personally involved in no less than two life-or-death situations, both ending on a positive note thanks to some unique skills that I have aquired.

And all I want to do is write.

My job involves seeing things most folks will never see and doing things most folks will never do.

And all I want to do is write.

Another break gone by. This one was spent helping one of our nurses, a filipino, celebrate her birthday. Her husband and kids came in with loads of a noodle dish called pancit, and an egg roll called lumpia. Most excellent food to be sure, but hardly diet-grade. I guess I'll have to work out a little extra tomorrow.

Well, what do you think? Pretty cool, huh? I guess it's time to catch up with the times.

(Footnote- I did get on a computer and fix one typo, after a SUCCESSFUL submission!)

Ken McCreless is just a guy who loves to write, and was born to do so. He is a freelance writer with several projects ongoing, including books and magazines. A huge fan of both irony and history, Ken has dedicated his life and his writing to serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

Way cool! I just love this technology! I have a Palm Treo with the full keyboard accessory. Congrats on your first article using the Blackberry Curve. It was a success and no reason to tell Houston we have a problem! (That's where the Horst's are.) I'm glad you're good at your work and love writing. You help many more with that combo, Ken!

Thank you so much, Avis. I've always been a techno geek, just never to this extent.

Interesting article! I've been doing some writing on a portable device too (HTC Touch HD) - its a novel experience for me, but I'm quite enjoying it! The handwriting recognition works quite well, and being able to write on the go (and upload it straight to the Internet or a computer) is strangely liberating in a way

It really is liberating, isn't it? I don't know how I made it without one! Thanks for stopping by, Ben, and for commenting. Good to hear from you.
